Earth Day 2021: Everything You Need To Know
April 21, 2021
Today, the climate crisis has become more evident than ever, and that has made Earth Day 2021 a lot more significant than the previous years. First started in the US in 1970, this day has come to symbolize the coming together of millions of people around the world who pledge their support for the environment, bringing into focus the urgency of saving the planet through the right actions.
When the world went into a lockdown because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were reports about how nature was healing, but now the global CO2 emission levels are higher than what they were before the pandemic hit. It has become imperative that we cut emissions by a staggering 45 percent to prevent global warming from increasing any further, and that fact alone highlights the sheer extent of the problem that we are all faced with. This is why we need to pull our socks up and this Earth Day, commit to viable and efficient action to combat climate change.
Here are a few things you should know about Earth Day:
What Is Earth Day?
Earth Day is an annual event that seeks to call attention to the rampant environmental degradation that we are witnessing. It highlights various issues, ranging from deforestation to global warming. For Earth Day on April 22, 2021, US President Joe Biden has invited leaders from across the world to take part in a virtual summit to discuss climate action. The event will be live streamed.
When Do We Celebrate Earth Day?
Ever since it was established in 1970, each year 22 April is celebrated as Earth Day. This year, however, climate activists have called for the event to be celebrated over three days, from April 20 to April 22, 2021.
When Was The First Earth Day?
The history of Earth Day can be traced back to a time in the US when the country was experiencing a tumultuous political and economic environment. The country was divided over the Vietnam War. The economy was improving but at a heavy environmental cost. Oil and chemical industries were booming. Air and water pollution was rampant but it was considered as a sign of development. It was only after a devastating oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, in 1969 that the people fighting for the climate got the final push to go ahead with a call for better industrial practices and regulations. US senator and environmentalist Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day in 1970 to emphasize on the importance of clean air and clean water.
Themes
Each year, Earth Day is marked by a specific theme. For 2021, the theme is “Restore Our Earth.” The theme focuses on how we can reduce our impact on the planet in a post-pandemic world and also combat the damage that we have already done.
